On Catch-22

Written by Joseph Heller and published in 1961, Catch-22 is a fictional sweet following American bombardier John Yossarian. Yossarian is stati iodined on the island of Pianosa, off the west coast of Italy, during World War Two. The novel is a harsh critique of war and the governments that wage it, as opposed to the usual good vs. evil rhetoric splashed over most WW2 stories. In particular, Heller assails the sheer senselessness of the American force when it continually cites Catch-22, a mysterious belief that is essentially a blank check for the government to do whatever it wants. Amorphous and never across-the-boardy explained, Catch-22 nevertheless exerts an dogged force through and throughout the novel.
The first such instance is when Yossarian wishes to be sent home, so he tells the group doctor, Doc Daneeka, that he is wan and must be grounded. Daneeka responds by citing Catch-22, which states that Concern for ones safety in the face of real, immediate hazard is the process of a rational mind, so anyone claiming to be crazy in order to be grounded must really be sane. Furtherto a greater extent, anyone willing to put themselves in danger by firm missions has to be crazy, but they cannot be taken off of trash duty until they ask.



Catch-22 is obviously a logical trap meant to oblige everyone flying missions, but none of the men question its sappy nature. This blind obedience is both the punch line and the afterthought. Its humorous at first, because people would see right through Catch-22 in the real world, but the ejaculates of doubt are relieve planted. The novel continues, and each time the military references Catch-22 to defuse a problem, the reader laughs, but sooner or later that seed of doubt will blossom into an intriguing question: What if the military really did use practices like these in reality?
