Irish American Girl

November 21, 1897 Its bitter cold today while we wait atop our suitcases to board the ship. I cant decide if Im anxious with fear or excitement. I am traveling with my older brother Conor. He is the only family I w adversity vex left once we arrive in America. Ma and Da still reside in Bantry, the trust I call class. Unfortunately, it is not much of a station these days. The land deliverer that we rent from is sure to re genius us that we own nothing of our own and ar indebted to him for letting us reside there. We work for everything we have. We work the land and all of the potatoes we have planted on it, or we did. Not long ago a potato famine struck our hometown and caused all of our crops to go under. Millions have already died from starvation. Without potatoes there is not nearly sufficient food or in hang to survive. This is the reason for my leaving. Ma and Da, bless their hearts, are sending us off, for our betterment, to, A land where all of your dreams come true. We are told that in America, land is free! Money is everywhere! And that we can be whoever we want to be. This is the reason for my excitement. Leaving home and all that I know is the reason for my fear. December 6, 1897 Its no wonder passage on this ship hail so shrimpy, the conditions are nearly unbear able.

There are no toilets, the stench is horrid, its dark, the cots leave no room to even spin over, its unsanitary, and uncomfortable. I wish I was home. Conor is being unafraid for the both of us.
