In the 1930s a small comp whatsoever of migrant workers left their homes in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and migrated to the western United States. They were without homes, choose privileges, since the 1940s there invite been thousands and thousands of immigrant workers brought from foreign countries, most of them from Mexico. Most of these workers ar in agriculture and they receive very little if any legal representation.
In the mid-60s Cesar C clearz organized a group of migrant that were mainly in calcium. In 1970 after the workers had done a nationwide boycott, had marches, and strikes, more than half of the grape growers in California signed contracts with the AFL-CIO United Farm Workers Organizing committee. This committee which was headed by Chavez a full union in 1972. The organization was able to have some success in other states as well, however found itself in a battle with the Teamsters Union, who claimed to represent migrant workers and they had negotiated some of the UFWs contacts in California.
The Teamsters attempted to break up UFW and the dissolving agent was violence and strikes. Another result of this rivalry was a pooh-pooh in membership for the UFW, in the late 70s it had a membership of close to 100,000, in 1996 its membership was about 24,000 this is a study decline for the UFW. In the state of Washington the Union Nacional de Trabajadores direct an alliance of four labor groups accusing fruit growers of not paying overtime pay, not providing safe working conditions, and not allowing the workers to organize without the fear of some type of retribution. There were about 45,000 workers involved in the case.
